Lords of Chaos - Varg Vikernes "Just a lot of Made-Up Crap"
We have to admit, when we heard there was a movie being made about the origins of Norwegian Black Metal surrounding the bands Burzum and Mayhem, two of our favourite black metal bands of all time, we were both excited and apprehensive.
Those who follow the brand will know that black metal has inspired many of our alternative clothing designs and is a genre that we respect and admire - our founder Gareth Cook, is even the frontman of Scottish progressive black metal outfit, Haar.
So believe us when we say, we had high hopes for this film - which grew when we learned the movie, titled "Lords of Chaos" was to be directed by Jonas Åkerlund, once a member of the Swedish black metal band Bathory.
However, as more details emerged - specifically the denial from all band members, past or related, to use any of their music within the film - it became clear to us that Lords of Chaos wasn't going to be the movie we all hoped to see.
Now, Varg Vikernes, founder of Burzum and ex-Mayhem has spoken out about the film which centres around him, bandmate Euronymous and their now infamous legacy.
Speaking of the movie Vikernes said:
“The whole film is just made up. As you probably know, the whole film is just a character murder and they completely ignore the facts … When you at one point realise that this film is just a lot of made-up crap, I suggest you contemplate around the concept a little bit and understand that I am not the only one in history who has been exposed to their character murder. Character murder is a common weapon used by people who don’t like Europeans.”
Vikernes infamously murdered Euronymous in 1993, which he insisted was in self defense, he was also found guilty of three church burnings, an act that swept through Norway at the time and has become synonymous with the Norwegian Black Metal scene. He served 15 years of a 21-year prison sentence for the crimes.
Lords of Chaos is scheduled to be released in the United States on February 8, 2019 and in UK cinemas from 29th March 2019.
