The Rise of Skywalker: 5 things we can expect based on the trailer

42 years since the release of A New Hope, the Star Wars Saga may finally be coming to an end as the trailer for the films 9th installment The Rise of Skywalker claims. Such hype has no limit with the trailer already pulling in millions of views and numerous dissections across the web.

But rather than dissect it as everyone else does, I want to look at what we should expect from the final film based on what the trailer shows us...

1. Rey and Kylo Ren will finally face off.

It starts in a wonderfully dramatic style. Rey stands in the desert as a TIE Silencer hurdles towards her. The ship is similar to Kylo Ren’s, suggesting the sibling conflict is finally coming to a dramatic ending. She starts to run away, but not in fear. She knows what she is doing.

The Silencer is almost upon her but at the last second, she jumps, spinning gracefully in the air and bringing her repaired lightsabre around to deliver a devastating blow to the cockpit, But just before there is any impact, we cut away. The stylistic decision made me nod in appreciation.

Side note/rant*Trailers in the last few years have developed this terrible habit of over showing, whether it be jokes, action or the whole story (I’m looking at you Pet Semetary!) rather than teasing you with just enough to make you want to see the film. Thankfully, The Rise of Skywalker does not indulge in this bad habit.

2. More lore and worldbuilding.

An A-Wing approaching a city at night and Rey comes across what appears to be the wreckage of a Death Star. These flashes show we are getting some history and perhaps new perspectives on previous events to flesh out the Star Wars Universe, something I feel the films have been leaving to other media to do in their place.

3. Plenty of action.

We get a glimpse Kylo Ren slicing an enemy in half with his lightsabre, and a vehicle chase through the desert, showing us there will be no shortage of action to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

4. Lando returns!

A little bit bittersweet this one as reports said that the final trilogy would each focus on a subplot by each of the three original cast. First, it was Han Solo, then Luke Skywalker with the final film supposedly about Leia. Since her tragic death, screenwriters have been busy creating a way around this by crafting the film around Lando Calrissian. So as much as I may enjoy seeing him back in the Millennium Falcon, I also know the cost.

5. Its gonna be an emotional rollercoaster.

We see someone holding onto the medal awarded to Luke and Han awarded after the battle of Yavin IV and an embrace between Rey and Leia which suggests a greater emotional depth. If this truly is the end of the saga, there are a lot of questions that need answering. So it’s going to have its work cut out if it is to satisfy everyone in tying up loose ends. I nearly teared up seeing Carrie Fisher as I thought she would not be in the final film at all. But it would have been such a disservice to not have the legendary character take one final bow. Will we see Han Solo though?

What this trailer does so well, is that all these flashes are without context, however, ask the questions we want to find out the answers to.

As the iconic Star Wars font appears alongside the subtitle, we hear Luke say in a voiceover “no one’s ever really gone”, a reference to his own and Obi-Wan Kenobi’s transcendence in the previous films. However, rather than give us comfort, we hear the unmistakable maniacal laugh of Emperor Palpatine. See & hear for yourself in the trailer below...

Overall, The Rise of Skywalker should be a lesson to all marketing teams on how to make a trailer. As they have crafted a trailer that die-hard fans of the franchise, newcomers, and connoisseurs of film trailers can enjoy. Well done. If the final product delivers on what the trailer is promising, then it will be an exciting and deeply emotional end to one of cinemas greatest franchises.
