Game of Thrones Season 8 Episode 1 Premiere: Was it the Mind-Blowing Sequence of Tits and Death That We Hoped For?

WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS

We finally saw the Game of Thrones countdown reach zero, social media saw a break from people posting about Brexit, and fans finally got what they were hoping for, or did they?

People aren’t really used to waiting a year and a half for anything these days, we’re all about the instant gratification. With the extended break of Game of Thrones, the expectation was certainly set for a mind-blowing cocktail of tits and death. We got some tits, and we witnessed the demise of relatively unimportant characters. Aside from that, we saw plenty of reunions, plenty of Daenerys attempting to assert her power in the North. Am I the only one hoping that Sansa puts Daenerys in her place? It’s been an emotive journey watching the ‘fair ruler’ Daenerys, ascend to power, but now that she has power (and two huge dragons), Cersei doesn’t actually look that bad, does she?

Daenerys Targaryen Iron Throne GOT Game Of Thrones Season 8 Episode 1

She’s been adamant for a while now that she will sit on the Iron Throne and rule over the Seven Kingdoms. Now that she’s closer than ever to the throne – even if that is in a slightly glacial Westeros with a constantly growing White Walker army, she’s even more smug about it than ever. But will it last for long? Not if Sam has anything to do with it.

With the much-anticipated first episode, we saw the humblest character left in the cast was planting the seeds for her unraveling. But it was through no act of volition, it was the simple unveiling of the truth, along with waking Jon up to the fact that there’s a reason why the Northerners will be wary of her. A strong theme around this episode was the strengthening of Jon’s character in synergy with the stripping away of Daenerys’s. But she pretty much has it coming now, anyone that makes Samwell’s lip wobble is on my shit list!

Episode 1 was all about the set-up for the action to come, the best moments were few and far between. In fact, I didn’t feel any discernible emotion until the last five minutes of the episode. But there’s only a certain amount of reunions that you can try and revel and rejoice within. After feeling slightly disappointed, I found the intrinsic value on what had been shown during the first episode.

5 Best Moments Run Down.

Tormund & Dolorous Edd Reunion

It seemed like the writers had absolutely dropped the banter ball up until this point.

It was finally revealed in the season 8 trailer that Tormund along with Beric would return after we spent a year with high anxiety wondering if they’ll make it into Season 8.

As soon as the camera panned to them, viewers were invited to get the fear – for pretty much the first time in the episode! It was perceptible that they were walking the same ground as the White army by the blood stains on the floor without the bodies. We know that all of our favourites are going to have to come face to face with the army at some point – unless they’re killed off by another arch nemesis, but I will remain thankful to the scriptwriters for not doing away with the fiery monolithic hero just yet. I suppose it will be fairly sad to see Beric die too – but up until this point, his character really isn’t the strongest. He’s just the guy with the flaming sword and resurrection powers.

The brief glimpse of humour between Tormund and Edd was quickly doused, but the exchange was nothing short of genius. We know that neither of them is the sharpest tools in the shed, so the prospects of slightly moronic heroes going up against a seemingly unstoppable frosty force makes it so much more amiable. “I’VE ALWAYS HAD BLUE EYES” were the simple five words which made the episode.

Yara Proves She’s as Badass and Important as Ever

Imagine, you’ve been captured by your evil rampantly sexual uncle who only really cares about having sex with Cersei, your brother who just left you to die eventually comes to save you, what’s your natural reaction? Headbutt him of course.

While Theon got plenty of stick for jumping from the burning ship from fans who don’t really understand PTSD, many more fans could sympathise with his decision within that moment. At least he finally got the balls (sorry Theon) to go back for her, but rather than gushing with gratification Yara proves her strength once more. At least she’s not the type to hold a grudge. She doesn’t hang around when it comes to cleaning herself up and setting sail once more, but she doesn’t go rushing right back to the side of Daenerys – another example of defiance to her ruling?

Instead, Yara takes a far more pragmatic approach to help to ensure survival by setting up an alternate stronghold just in case it doesn’t go to plan in the North. It would be very stupid to underestimate Yara at this point.

We Get to See the Golden Company & Meet Harry Strickland

Strickland was the only new cast member of any real consequence to see their first appearance in Game of Thrones with this episode. While he was fairly silent as Euron spilled his toxic masculinity all over the throne room, the expectation has definitely been set that we will see plenty of charismatic action from Strickland. Did anyone else notice that he had a very similar appearance to the King Slayer in episode one? It is already tangible that Cersei doesn’t have much patience when it comes to Euron, her teaming up with Strickland seems like a far more viable plot progression. Or maybe it’s just the one I’m hoping for, seeing Euron have his way with Cersei is a little sickening. If the directors had chosen to show that scene between Euron and Cersei it would have been nothing short of traumatic.

The fact that she finally caved to Euron’s demands showed a poignant sign of vulnerability. She tried her best to retain her steeliness, but you could see the cracks in her Ice Queen guise as she insisted that he left. With that scene, plenty of fans will have felt a hint of empathy for Cersei for the very first time. Although, this happens after Bronn receives the orders from her to kill both Jaime and Tyrion for their betrayal, so maybe we shouldn’t be feeling all too sorry for her after all.

Gendry & Arya Had a Pretty Cute Moment

The Starks had plenty of reunions in this episode, but none were quite as sweet as when Gendry and Arya finally had a little catch-up. Of course, it was adorable when Jon asked her if she had used Needle and her response was “once or twice”. But I’m fairly sure that a lot of single fans will be wishing someone would look at them like Gendry looks at Arya. We’ve seen Arya grow up from being a little bean, so up until now, it would have been incredibly cringey if we saw anyone with a non-platonic interest for her. (Although that didn’t stop fans writing fan fiction based around her and the Mountain. FILTH.) In their first encounter, Gendry had nothing but respect for Arya, now that respect is entwined with an irrefutable fondness and it’s going to be all too emotional watching that relationship dynamic unfolding.

But what does she want that insane weapon for? So many questions about the power couple we’re all hoping will form in season eight. So many.

Samwell Gets Infinitely More Loveable

Sam asking Daenerys for a pardon for stealing a few books and his father’s sword acted as a reaffirmation of why Sam is one of the best characters. While his character hasn’t seen much of a transformation since we first saw him rock up in the Night’s Watch but there surely can’t be many fans who haven’t found a real soft spot for Sam by now.

He’s had his moments killing White Walkers and Thenns, but with this episode, he’s never been more appreciated in the dilapidated cast. So many awesome warriors have died before season 8, but then there’s Sam; Game of Thrones’ real sweetheart. We already knew that Sam wasn’t overly fond of his father, but rather than bowing to Daenerys’s merciless choices when it comes to her prisoners of war, he does the admirable thing of doing a little cry and running out of the room.

As if his day wasn’t bad enough, as he tries to process the news that his father and brother Dickon are dead, Brann is waiting with orders to finally reveal to Jon Snow that he’s never been bastard and he’s the true heir to the Throne. As you watch Jon register the new information, you can literally see the cogs turning and spelling out “well, this is going to ruin the honeymoon period”.  I’ll definitely be grabbing the popcorn for Daenerys’s face when she finds out. But it was Sam’s bravery of actually going up to his friend and revealing that actually, his new girlfriend is a bit of a monster. That’s something that will resonate with many people!

Then there’s the WTF were they thinking moments….

No one is perfect, and that certainly includes the scriptwriters. I’ve kept the criticism light so far but there’s an elephant in the room – and not the ones the Golden Company failed to bring! The Jon, Dany and the dragons' scene? Oh dear. Did you cringe?  I did. We’ve all been waiting for Jon to jump on the back of a dragon – but making it look like a scene from Harry Potter where he’s losing control of his broomstick combined with scenes from the Never Ending Story got plenty of eye-rolls from me. Whoever decided that the dragons enjoying watching their mother getting kissed is beyond unforgivable. Someone should have really reminded the scriptwriters that dragons are supposed to be the terrifying beasts who will play a pivotal role in the war to come.
