Keanu Proves that Nice Guys Don’t Finish Last After John Wick Box Office Success

Anyone who has been following the John Wick franchise probably won’t be surprised to learn that once again, Keanu Reeves has had cinema lovers flocking to the big screen for the opening weekend of John Wick 3 – Parabellum.

Is it for the franchise itself?

Or is it for the simple fact that we can’t seem to get enough of Keanu?

John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum Keanu Reeves

John Wick may have had to go up against a fair number of other big on-screen contenders for the premiere weekend, yet, no one could quite compete with the tale of the former hitman who is now on the run after killing a crime lord who in hindsight probably should have left alive. There’s a $14 million bounty on this head, but that’s nothing compared to what the box office raked in on the opening weekend. Now, the entire John Wick series has raked in $482 million in total, making it Keanu’s 17th most successful film of all time.

Unlike with many other sequels, the John Wick franchise is one which only gets more and more popular with time. Pundits predicted that the third installation of high-octane action would be the most popular, yet, no one predicted that it would be Keanu Reeves 2nd best opening weekend ever – following on with his success with the Matrix.

Aside from the usual hitman rhetoric, high-speed chases, and general badass Hollywood garb, John Wick 3 provides a starker and much more poetic narrative; the theme of sacrifice for retribution runs strongly through this feature. Keanu’s irrefutably unique screen presence has had a lot to do with the success of the franchise, as it has with many of his successful titles.

We won’t give you all too many spoilers, just in case you’re planning on waiting for the DVD release. Although you’ll have to wait until September to grab yourself a copy of the DVD. So, you might as well head down to the cinema while you can to witness America’s most loveable fictional hitman.

The Actor, the Enigma, the Lone Wolf

Leading up to and following the release of John Wick 3, social media lit up with intrigue over Keanu Reeves and his less than typical Hollywood lifestyle. People seemed baffled that despite his success, fame, and money that he could still call himself ‘lonely’. This was enough to make a lot of people throw a pity party for him and invoke the usual banal response of “OMG someone please fall in love with him”. But it turns out, the interview was entirely fabricated by a Malaysian news outlet, using fragments of comments he’d stated earlier and pairing them with questions that had never been asked.

Of course, the inclination to fabricate fake news was an attempt to make clickbait news, I suppose we should just be grateful that they didn’t try to undo the good reputation which he has built for himself since he has been in the public eye.

While it isn’t all too uncommon for actors to do a fair bit of virtue signaling in the attempt to boost their profile, when it comes to Keanu, it would seem that his motivations are a little less self-serving. Furthermore, he seems void of the bravado which we are so used to actors having. He shows a true sense of humility and depth, which was shown in an interview (which actually happened) when he was asked “what do you think happens when we die” he responded, “the ones who love us will miss us." - if your heart hasn’t just melted, it’s probably made of stone. The usual response to that question would be an idea of what happens to our mind and body, but for the first thought to be for others, that just demonstrates a whole new level of humanity and empathy.

Keanu Reeves Happy Nice Guy

After a long stint of being booked for scuzzy, stoner roles, Keanu matured, and Hollywood didn’t quite know what to do with him. He’s as attractive as any of the other leading men in Hollywood, yet, his visible aloofness made him a hard cookie to mold. While he’s an incredible actor, there’s no taking that pensive stare out of his eyes, but perhaps, there’s a good reason for it to be there. He’s kept his life as a closed book since the 90s when his girlfriend Jennifer Syme gave birth to a stillborn baby, then she later died in a car accident. That would definitely be enough to break anyone, you can’t blame Keanu for remaining an enigma.

Honestly, I cringe when I think of his perception of the public’s disparity over his loneliness. All of those tragic people who think that they can ‘save’ a tortured artist. He never asked for horny sympathy. He certainly won’t feel better after seeing the memes, or recognition of “cheer up Keanu Day”.

Remember his quote “I’m single and I don’t feel lonely, I take myself out to eat, I buy myself clothes. I have great times by myself. Once you know how to take care of yourself, company becomes an option and not a necessity”.

Despite being an intrinsic part of Hollywood, he’s not greedily swallowed the idea that the Hollywood happy ending is the only avenue to happiness. Do you want to tell all the people proclaiming their love to him, or should I? Oops. Looks like I already have!
